History

The Barrel was built around 1900. Up until 1982, the pub was a manor house and toll house where the people who lived in Clinton Devon Estate’s houses in Beer, paid their rent. Then in the spring of 1982 the building was converted into a pub. The Hunt family bought the pub in 1990 when it was a very busy drinking pub with only a small snack menu. Since then many changes have been made to keep the pub moving with the times, initially having a new kitchen built and extending the bar and family room. This worked very well until we acknowledged that there was a general trend towards better quality food in pubs. So when Luke returned in 1998 we changed to a menu with fresh local fish, as well as snacks. This proved to be so successful that we reduced our snacks further and when Robert joined the pub in Spring 2001, we all decided to make more changes, developing our non-smoking,, comfortable restaurant, with pictures of Old Beer and the Quarry Caves. The restaurant also doubles as a small function room, catering for parties of up to twenty.
